Independent Practice Association (IPA). Defined

One of three models into which traditional HMOs are classified. In contrast to staff and group models, this model is an HMO with which an organization of physicians, or an IPA, contracts for only a portion of their practices. Physicians in the IPA provide care for the HMO's enrollees at a capitated rate or fee-for-service rate paid to the IPA, which in turn pays the participating physicians. The physicians work in their own settings
